Derek graduated in 2005 from Newark (Ohio) High School and attended Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Alabama.
Derek was signed as a Free Agent by the White Sox on December 14, 2016 after eight seasons with the Texas Rangers. He ranks among the Rangers’ all-time leaders in shutouts (T6th, 8), starts (8th, 158), strikeouts (8th, 790), wins (9th, 62), quality starts (9th, 82) and innings-pitched (10th, 985.0). Derek has made 14 career postseason appearances, going 3-1 with a 5.02 ERA (21 ER/37.2 IP). From 2011-13, he ranked among the American League leaders in complete games (T8th, 6), winning percentage (9th, .644), wins (10th, 38), starts (T10th, 92) and innings-pitched (12th, 586.1).
In 2015, Derek launched The 60 Feet 6 Foundation, a non-profit organization founded to help raise awareness and continue the fight against leukemia, specifically pediatric forms of the disease.
